January 2010 Tax Changes
Starting January 2010, many people will notice differences in their net pay:
- If you reached the maximum contributions on CPP/EI deductions in 2009, they will begin again in 2010 (until you max out again).
- Provincial sales tax on parking will be increased from 7% to 21% by the South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority (Translink)
- AAPS members have a dues holiday this January. In February, dues deductions will return.
- Basic Personal Exemption in BC has gone from $9,373.00 to $11,000.00
- This is a reminder if you have claimed anything other than basic exemption you should complete a new TD1 & TD1BC
- Renewal for Authorization for Reduction of Income Tax Deduction at Source should be completed and copy of the approval letter sent in to Payroll.

Employee or Contractor?
UBC hires people for a variety of positions to do a wide range of jobs. Sometimes there is confusion around whether the individual hired for a task can be paid as an independent contractor rather than as an employee. Click here for more information on these roles and making the right decision.
